Month in Review: May 2022

Another month has passed and I feel like life has come to a standstill. I don’t really know why I have been feeling down lately, but I think it might be the weather combined with the fact that I’m still recovering from a rather nasty infection I had a few weeks ago. In any case, one thing remains the same; I’m reading a lot. More than usual because I don’t feel like doing anything else. I haven’t written anything new in weeks. I’m spending less and less time on social media. Books are the only thing that makes me happy right now. Sounds rather depressing when you say it out loud, but there it is. Anyway, I just wanted to post a quick update about what I have been reading in case someone is looking for a recommendation. And of course, you are welcome to share your reads with me. I love to hear from my followers and friends. Take care and be safe.

Books I Read in May 2022

I started my month with one of my favorite books, Murder in Three Acts by Agatha Christie. If you have read my previous monthly updates, you know how much I know Hercule Poirot mysteries. They are my absolute favorite and this book is no exception.

Three seemingly unrelated deaths happen and now Hercule is on a quest to, not only find a link between them but also to unmask the killer. As he puzzle over this mystery, we get to know each character a little better, and when the truth is uncovered, it comes as a complete surprise. And very satisfying, I must add.

As a reader, I don’t actively try to solve the murder mystery as I read. Instead, I just lay back and let the lead detective do his work. Hercule Poirot has yet to disappoint me. I loved the way this book is written, enjoyed the mystery, and overall found it thoroughly entertaining. It’s a five stars read for me and I definitely recommend it to all mystery lovers, hoping you enjoy it as much as I have.

After that, I read three books in Hercule Poirot’s short stories. They are quick and fun mysteries. I often pick up one of these in between my main reads. Usually, I listen to the audiobooks of these. And my next main read was another one of Agatha Christie’s mysteries; One, Two, Buckle My Shoe. Yet another five stars read. I have noticed that I’m reading a lot of her books this year. Thankfully, she wrote so many that I still am not done with all of her works. A few of her other mysteries I read this month include; Sad Cypress, Short stories in The Labors of Hercules series (I think there are 12 or 13 short stories in this series), Evil Under the Sun, and Four and Twenty Blackbirds. Most of these books are four or five stars reads for me.

Other Murder Mysteries I Read in May

Agatha Christie is not the only mystery writer I love. I’m actually quite fond of murder mysteries, especially the cozy ones. In May, I discovered a few new-to-me authors. And read a few I already love and admire. North Western by Jordan Elizabeth is quite a unique murder mystery in the sense that it is also a ghost story. It’s set in the old West. I quite enjoyed the rural setting of the tale and loved how it unfolded; keeping me on my toes and second-guessing who the murderer might be. The end came as a surprise and overall, I think it’s a great story. Especially if you are looking for a quick and satisfying read, this is for you. A five stars book indeed.

A new mystery writer I discovered this month is Melissa Erin Jackson. A Facebook friend recommended her books to me. Some of them are available on Youtube as free audiobooks. I listened to three of her mystery books. I love how the main character is a modern-day witch. I also enjoyed the main character’s romantic entangles and family dynamics, but mostly, I loved the mystery side of the stories. The three books are; Pawsitively Poisonous, Pawsitively Cursed, and Pawsitively Secretive. There are two more books in the series and I’m looking forward to reading them. Each book is a complete mystery story but there is also an underlying story that continues. Still, you can read these as standalone.

Caught Witch Handed by Cathrine Waltan is another witchy mystery I read in May, but sadly, I didn’t enjoy it enough to recommend it. Then, there is Hex and the Single Girl by Valrie Frankel. Both books are fun reads, with romance and mystery. Not to mention interesting characters that will have you smiling.

My last mystery of the month was Murder on Girl’s Night Out by Anne George. This is another audiobook that I listened to on Youtube. I enjoyed the story but not enough to continue with the series.

Some Romance Novels, Too

I read five romance novels in May 2022. Two are religious romances and three are historicals. They are all interesting stories with likable characters. I gave them either four or five stars.

  1. Improper Relations by Janet Mullany
  2. Mr. Bishop and the Actress by Janet Mullany
  3. A Matter of Temptation by Stacy Reid
  4. A Love Song to Cherish by Josie Riviera
  5. Candleglow and Mistletoe by Josie Riviera

In May, I also read my very first graphic novel. I requested it on NetGalley mostly on a whim and I’m so glad that I did. Black Mass Rising by Theo Prasidis is a wonderful story with beautiful art by Judie Muir. It is supposed to be horror but I didn’t find it scary at all. I loved it for the supernatural/fantasy element. It’s a unique vampire story. The cover was the first thing that attracted me to this story. And I’m glad that I got to read it because it’s a great story with beautiful art. I am not a fan of Dracula. And still, I enjoyed this story. Loved the twist at the end. My only complaint is that it ended abruptly. I felt as if there should be more to this tale, and there might be. I’d definitely keep a lookout for a volume II. I gave it four out of five stars.

Finally, Wishtress by Nadine Brandes. This book is not out yet and I received a complimentary copy via NetGalley. This is my only Young Adult Fantasy read of the month. And it is amazing, and by that, I mean amazingly annoying. (Ops!) No, but seriously, I couldn’t find a single likable character in this whole thing. That doesn’t however, mean I didn’t like the story because I absolutely loved it. It’s a sad story set in a tragic world where people either have Talents or they want them. Why though, is anyone’s guess for it seems that having a Talent just makes your life all the more difficult and your choices all the more important. They will not only affect you but also the ones around you.
And in this twisted world, which is much like ours, there are two people with Talents trying to survive in the best possible way. Although they are not doing a very good job of it, that’s what the story is all about. It’s one of those beautiful tales that will make you cry and throw things at walls. So, get ready for an emotional ride. Every backstory is filled with tears. Every character is fighting in vain. Every figure of authority is cruel and power-hungry. And almost everyone is a hypocrite. Yet, among all of them are two souls who are constantly learning from their mistakes and attempting to do better. And they are the main characters. A Wishtress and a Talented. It’s their story and it’s wonderful in its own twisted way. I loved every minute of it and kept turning the pages until the end. And what an awesome ending it is, too. All in all, I enjoyed reading it and would recommend it to all readers, especially those who are not afraid of a little darkness. Because only after you have endured it, you can reach the light that will last. It’s a five stars read for me.

I also re-read one of my own short stories. I do that often. I don’t know if I should love my books as much as I do, but sometimes I feel as if I’m writing for myself only. (Ops!) Check out The Mirror, a Snow White retelling.

This Or That: What Kind Of Stories You Love The Most?

We all love to read that much is clear if you’re here. But what do you read? Especially, what is it that you love to read the most? That is an important question. So, let’s get to know each other a little better.

I am a very diverse read and read almost all genres of fiction. Within genres, there are certain aspects of the story that I enjoy more than the others. But isn’t it true for all of us readers? There are things that we will always love more than the others. I thought it might be fun to pick “this or that” between a few things. Of course, “both” is always an option but for simplicity, we assume that we can only pick one from each category.

Time Travel or Space Travel?

I prefer time travel books more than space travel. Mostly, because I am a fan of historical fiction more than science-fiction. And when someone travels back in time, it is always fun to read about. Don’t you agree? It doesn’t have to be historical though. Time travel fantasies are often better and much more interesting reads. Also, time travel is common in science fiction as well. I have read stories that have both time travel as well as space travel, so that is also cool. In any case, my favorite time-travel stories include;

The Branches of Time (The Branches of Time #1) by Luca Rossi: The story begins with a black magic attack that kills the entire population of an island leaving three survivors. A couple and a priestess. There are secrets that the couple has no idea about. They don’t even know who their real enemy is and priestess is also hiding things from them. Stories from a time long forgotten… Then there is a cruel King in some other realm. He is planning to take over the world. But something keeps him caged…

This book has both magic and time travel, a great fantasy story. But I must admit there were some uncomfortable scenes that might be a little much for some readers.

The Branches of Time

My Super Sweet Sixteenth Century by Rachel Harris: It’s a story about a teenager who ends up in sixteenth-century Italy. Luckily she has ancestors there and they are more than willing to help her. But is this century really for her? Things are different here and as she learns more about the time period she also learns that she may not be able to stay here forever…

It’s a romantic comedy with all the sweetness and the best thing is how the characters grow through the story.

My Super Sweet Sixteenth Century (My Super Sweet Sixteenth Century, #1)

Warrior of the Highlands by Veronica Wolff: It’s a story about a highlander bend upon taking revenge and a modern age woman who ends up in the past. It was a beautiful and very well-written story. I read it many years ago but I remember how hard it was to put down once I started reading.

Warrior of the Highlands (Highlands, #3)

Dragons or Mermaids?

For me, it’s the dragons. In all honesty, I’ve read only a few books about mermaids, whereas, many about dragons. I don’t know if there are more mermaid books out there and maybe I haven’t found the right ones yet, but I prefer dragons anyway. Dragon shifters are amazing but even if they are not shifters and just good old dragons, that’s okay too. My favorites books with dragons in them are;

Dragon Mates (The Falk Clan Series) by C.D. Gorri: It is a story of four dragon shifter brothers. They spent centuries as prisoners and as they gain their freedom they decided to live among humans. Making their home in this new world, all they want is to live as a family and find their respective mates. It is a four books series and in each book, one of the brothers finds his fated mate. All four novels are amazing, well-written and interesting. I loved not only the four dragon shifters but also their mates. This series has some of my favorite fiction characters.

Dragon Mates: The Falk Clan Complete Series

And let’s not forget some of our most favorite series have dragons in them. Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, and Game of Thrones to name a few. Dragons are my favorite magical creatures of all times.

Werewolves or Vampires?

Werewolves! This one was a little tougher to choose because I absolutely love vampires too. Some of my favorite series have both werewolves and vampire characters. I enjoy reading about both. But still, if I must choose one I’ll choose werewolves.

The Mating by Nicky Charles: This book is a perfect mix of romance, intrigue, and suspense. If I remember correctly I had loved reading it. It’s definitely a good paranormal romance with werewolves.

I have read book two and three of this series as well, they were also good. It was originally a trilogy but there are some other books in the series too. I haven’t yet read those.

The Mating (Law of the Lycans, #1)

Grazi Kelly series by C.D. Gorri: This is an ongoing Young Adult series by one of my favorite authors. The story revolves around a werewolf shifter, Grazi. She is a normal teenager except for the fact that she happens to be a werewolf. The story weaves a magical world where all kinds of paranormal creatures live, hidden from humans. This series focuses on werewolves and witches though. There is a curse, and Grazi is the only one who can lift it. So far I am enjoying this series and hope that it ends well.

Contemporary or Historical?

Historical romances are my favorite genre. Since I started reading them I’ve not stopped. There are many genres I switch between, some I’ve almost given up on, but historical fiction is one genre that has been a constant for me. Any time I pick up a historical novel I end up falling in love with it. Not that I don’t read contemporary books, I do. But when it comes to choosing one I’ll always choose historical romance.

Let Sleeping Dukes Lie by Emily Windsor: This is book two in Rules of the Rogue series and can be read as standalone. It has mystery, romance, and humor. I loved it! The story is intriguing and the characters are interesting. I had enjoyed book one too but this one is my favorite because of both main characters. These two people who can’t seem to stand each other actually fell in love and their unlikely couple is amazing. They have great chemistry and there isn’t a single dull moment when they are together. Definitely, one of the best historical fiction I have ever read.

Let Sleeping Dukes Lie (Rules of the Rogue, #2)

Twice as Wicked by Elizabeth Bright: The story is about a sister who wants to find her sister’s killer and take revenge. And it’s about twin brothers whose fates are intertwined since birth. It’s mysterious and quite romantic.

Twice As Wicked (Wicked Secrets, #1)

Once a Courtesan by Liana LeFey: Another great historical romance, a must read if you like historicals. It is a crime thriller set in 1700s London and explore the darker side of the city. It is a thrilling read with little romance. The story is about a girl’s school headmistress and a constable. But there are secrets that must be revealed before their story comes to an end. It’s well-written and the author has not glossed over the less fortunate people’s plight. Life in 1700s London is most definitely not as easy as one would hope…

Once a Courtesan (Once Wicked, #2)

Small Town or Big Cities?

Small town settings are the best. Perhaps it’s because I myself am a city girl so I’m always intrigued by the quaint small town stories. Some of the best ones I’ve read include;

The Perfect Match by Kristan Higgins: One of my most favorite authors, Higgins rarely disappoints when it comes to contemporary romance. This might not be her best work but this book is quite good, romantic and has some great characters. I loved it and I think if you like small town settings then you will like it too.

The Perfect Match (Blue Heron, #2)

Breathe by Kristen Ashley: Oh! I remember the time when I was obsessed with this author. I read so many of her books and loved each and every one of them. Breathe is definitely one of her best works. Aside from all the things that come with a small-town setting, this book is very emotional and would make you cry for sure. But it is also sweet and romantic, in short, a perfect novel.

Breathe (Colorado Mountain, #4)

P.S. Don’t forget to share your own preferences in the comments. I’d love to know more about the stories you enjoy the most.

Ten Bookish Facts About Me

So, this post is all about me as a reader. I saw other bloggers sharing posts like this and I thought it was a great idea. I have always wanted to do it. This is the best way to get to know each other. Since I am a book blogger, it is safe to assume that I read a lot and that I love books. However, to what extent and how deep this book obsession goes, well, you will find out soon. So, read away!

  1. I usually read more than one books at a time.
  2. I usually read a normal length novel in one sitting. It takes me two to three hours, four max.
  3. I read a few erotica/erotic romance back in the day but soon got bored of the genre and have never picked it up ever since.
  4. I love murder mysteries these days, especially cozy mysteries. I am prone to switching between genres. No one genre holds my interest for long. The longest one that I read was probably horror novels, I read them pretty much all through my teenage.
  5. I prefer paperbacks to ebooks or hardcovers.
  6. I love old books more than new ones. So, I usually shop at old book banks. It means that I’m not usually up-to-date with my reads, but that doesn’t matter to me. I don’t have to read books that are published recently.
  7. I hate waiting for books so I usually only start a series when it’s already complete. The only time I read an incomplete series is when I am not aware that it’s an ongoing series. Only find that out once I’ve read book one and then I have to wait for the next book because I enjoyed it.
  8. I hate it when non-readers want to borrow my books. I know they will never read it and most probably will not return it and I just hate that they bother me with requests to borrow my babies. Why don’t people realize how precious books are to readers like me? It’s quite annoying. But when fellow readers ask, I am more than happy to lend my books and look forward to the discussion we will have later. 😉
  9. In my entire life, I’ve never met a person who shares my taste in books. By the way, I’m not talking about my online friends. Some of them do share my taste, some even write the books that I love.
  10. There is nothing I enjoy more than reading a good book. “Of all the things in the world I love books best.”

P.S. What about you? Any odd bookish habits that you would like to share? Let’s get to know each other

TBR: Books I’ve Been Dying To Read

My to-be-read (TBR) list is so long that it is practically impossible for me to read all those books. Does that stop me from adding more books to the pile? No, absolutely not. There are simply so many books out there and I want to read as many of them as possible. However, there are definitely some books that I want to read more than the others. I’ve compiled a list of books/series I want to read, hopefully, before this year ends and I thought I’d share them with you all.

The Lunar Chronicles by Marissa Meyer

Amazon Link

I already got all the four books and plan to read it very soon. Now only if I can find time for this. The problem is that I am a very impatient reader. I know that if I read the first book I’d want to keep reading and for that I need time. That’s why I have been waiting to start it. Let’s hope I get that chance soon. Sometimes other books distract me and I don’t get to read as I plan.

I have only heard good things about this series and I’m really looking forward to reading it soon.

Night World Series by L.J. Smith

Amazon Link

This is another series I planned to read, unfortunately, I just realized that I might never get around to it. As I was researching online I found out that not only is this an incomplete series, but also the last book in the series might never be published. I think it would be pointless to start it because then I’d just feel annoyed at not being able to complete the series. I pity the people who have been waiting for the final installment for over 20 years, just imagine!

nightworld_series1

I have read the Vampire Diaries series by the same author. I all honesty, it was a little disappointing. The series had started good but then it took a turn for the worst. I really didn’t like how that one had ended. Still, I wanted to give the author another chance. I have read some great review about Night world series and many readers claimed that it is much better than Vampire Diaries. That’s how it ended up on my TBR list and I even bought the book. Only to realize later that tenth and final book has yet to be published.

I am undecided actually, on one hand, I do want to read the series, but also I fear that in the end I’ll just be disappointed. As I said earlier, I am a very impatient reader and never ever willingly start a series unless it is already complete.

All the Lives We Never Lived: A Novel by Anuradha Roy

Amazon Link

All the Lives We Never Lived

It’s a historical fiction set in India and Dutch-held Bali. The story is about a woman who chooses her freedom over parenthood, told by her son. I feel that this might be something I’d want to read although I don’t have really high hopes for this book. Mostly, because it is set in the turbulent time of war and I rarely like such books. Still, it is supposedly a bestseller this year so I thought why not give it a chance?

The Crazy Rich Davenports by Shannyn Leah and Kelly Moore

Amazon Link

Dare to Enter (The Crazy Rich Davenports #1)

So, I have actually read the first two books of this series and they are great. It’s funny, mysterious, and so crazy that I couldn’t help but fall in love with these books. The story is told from different POVs and each character brings their own kind of craziness into the mix. A heartbroken widow, who tries to avoid all her problems by drinking and having sex with anyone and everyone. A lunatic mother who does her best to keep her daughter and grandchildren safe in a way she knows best. Two grandchildren who are sick and tired of their mother’s indifference and their grandmother’s craziness. Littles, kids who don’t know any better and their Nanny who is even crazier than all the Davenports put together. Each book ends on a cliffhanger. This is another series which is ongoing but I think the authors of CRD series are not going to let their readers down. I am looking forward to reading the next books. I hope that it continues to amuse me the way first two books have.

You can check out my review of book one here Books Eater

The Siren by Kiera Cass

Amazon Link

The Siren

This is another book that has been sitting on my shelf for quite some time now. It’s a YA fantasy novel and I’m really looking forward to reading it. Mostly, because I love fantasy novels but also because I have really high hopes for this one. The story is about a siren who falls in love with a human and that put them both in danger.

These are few of many books that I have been dying to read. Some of them I am sure I will read soon while there will be those I might never get around to read after all. That is how it is, you just keep finding new books to read and then you forget about the ones you were planning to read before them. let’s just hope that I get to read all of these and more.

P.S. I’d love to hear what’s at the top of your TBR pile, so do share. Happy reading, readers!

P.P.S. So, how many of these books have you read and what are your thoughts? Were they worth reading or didn’t live up to their hype?

Reading Is So Much More Than Just A Hobby!

Reading is not just a hobby for me, it’s my way of life. I’m sure it’s true for most of us, book lovers. We don’t read when we’re free, we make time for it. Don’t we? I love reading more than anything else in the world. It’s very rare for me to go without reading, even when I’m busy with studies or work. I read every day, usually before going to bed. It’s just who I am. I eat and breathe books. I like to contemplate about all the things written on pages. There is nothing more beautiful than knowing that you’re not alone in the world, books give us that.

What kind of a reader are you?

In addition to reading a lot, I also read everything, except non-fiction. I love novels, novelettes, novellas, short stories, and flash fictions. I love all kinds of books, paranormal, romance, historical, contemporary, psychological thrillers, murder mysteries, romantic comedies, cozy mysteries, chick-lits, steampunk, science fiction, young adult, new adult, adult, and everything in between. Usually, I switch between genres to keep things interesting. Which is your favorite genre to read or write in?

Recently, I’ve been reading a lot of short stories and flash fiction available online. And as you might know, I write them too, mostly short stories, sometimes poetry.

If you read online then what are your favorite sites? Mines are the Wattpad and the Commaful. I’ve discovered some of my best reads through these sites so, I don’t underestimate them at all. I like how different these sites are from each other but they suit me, as a reader and a writer both. Although, in my experience, I’ve found that Commaful has a more engaging audience than Wattpad. So from a writer’s perspective, I find it much better especially if you’re looking for constructive criticism/feedback. I sometimes read at Storybird too, however, that one is really for kids. You won’t find mature stuff there. I also follow a few blogs and publications at medium, they’re also fun to read and learn from. Actually, that’s where I got the idea of sharing my own short stories online. I found that I enjoy reading them and I also like to write them. Do you know of any other sites like these, where readers and writers can share their love for books? If so then do share.
Do you read multiple books at a time?   This is something I started doing fairly recently. I start more than one book at a time and then read them simultaneously. It helps me not to get bored when stories slow down. I read so much that for one book to hold my attention is just not possible unless it’s a quick read and I can finish it within a few hours.
How much time do you actually spend reading vs online sharing book love? books-1680953_1280.jpg I must confess, at times, I’m known to post about books on social media more than actually reading a book. It happens, I can’t help it. I follow a lot of authors and fellow readers and they post the most amazing book related stuff, it’s bound to get distract you from your reading. But, let’s face it, talking about books is a different kind of fun. Don’t you agree?
How about book therapy? Have you ever noticed how reading makes you feel better? When I feel gloomy I pick up a romantic comedy and all my worries are forgotten. When I feel depressed I go out and shop for books and just like that, I’m a happy person once again. When I feel lonely I rearrange my bookshelves and time flies away. There is so much of my happiness that depends on books. I wonder if it’s a healthy thing or not? Then I decide, who really cares? As long as I have books to read I’m happy and time me, that is all that matters. Books for life!
P.S. So, what kind of a reader are you? Do share your thoughts and experiences.

Horror Novels: What Scares You?

As you know Halloween is just around the corner. Although in my part of the world we don’t celebrate it, still it is my favorite time of the year. Why? Because I just love reading scary novels and watching scary movies and they are always more fun when everyone seems to be talking about them. Let’s face it, there days more of our lives are spent online than offline and when you’re online it really doesn’t matter where you’re from you can take part in anything and everything.

rawpixel-1048261-unsplash.jpg

I’m kind of a seasonal reader. I like to read Christmas-y stories in December, stories about new beginnings around the new year, romantic comedies in February, so on and so forth. Naturally, October is a month for horror.

artem-kovalev-352626-unsplash.jpg

But what is horror in your book? Do you think ghost stories are scary? Or do you like to read about monsters? Paranormal fantasy maybe? Or something entirely different?

If I’m being honest, ghosts stories don’t scare me at all. Werewolves and vampires have been romanticized so much that they are no longer scary either. To be fair, psychological thrillers scare me more than these kinds of books.

tetrebbien-545947-unsplash.jpg

Thrillers are certainly the best kind of books to increase your heart rate and have you worrying about your characters. They keep you on your toes, second guessing everything, and scaring you to death!

oldskool-photography-521187-unsplash.jpg

If we’re talking horror then I must talk about R.L. Stine. He is my most favorite author. I absolutely adore his fear street series, especially The Fear Stree Saga. I’ve been reading these books since I was a teenager and I still love them. Fear Street is a fictitious place, there are stories that most of the houses on this street are all haunted or they’ve brutal stories to tell. In Fear Street series there are no real monsters though, people turn out to be the real culprits. Although, in its spin-off series we deal with ghosts and curses. One of the books that I’ve read many times is Haunted (Fear Street #7). Anyhow, these books are thrilling but not really that scary. 99 Fear Street: The House of Evil trilogy was really scary though.

As far as recently published horror novels go, these are on my TBR;

  1. The Cabinet at the End of the World By Paul Tremblay
  2. Frankenstein in Baghdad By Ahmed Saadawi
  3. Into the Drowning Deep By Mira Grant
  4. The Forgotten Child By Melissa Erin Jackson
  5. My Pet Serial Killer By Michael J. Seidlinger

So, what are your favorite October reads? I’d love to hear about them.

Lost In Time: A Short Story

Tagline: Should you risk your present and the future for a different past?

guilherme-stecanella-366390-unsplash.jpg

The most important thing in life is to know what isn’t important. It’s better to let go of all the things that are weighing you down, especially, when they don’t even matter.

“Don’t let others tell you how to live your life,” that was the advice my mother gave me when I was twelve, “ask yourself, look into your own heart, you already have all the answers you need.”

I always listened to my mother, because she knew what was best for me. She loved me more than anyone ever could, and instinctively, I knew that she would never ever lead me astray. Even though she is no longer with me I still remember everything she ever said to me.

She had raised me to believe in myself and to be persistent. She always told me that it is very important to be decisive and never regret things that go wrong. She was a scientist like me and we know that life is just an experiment, a trial, and a lot can go wrong.

“Life is uncertain, sweetheart, things can and do go awry now that then and that’s okay,” she often said and like a fool, I believed her.

#

“You’re so stubborn. It’s not always a good thing to take such risks even if your plan seems to be perfect,” Sandy warned me, “sometimes instead of going forward it’s okay to take a left or a right turn.”

“I don’t care what you think. I love you, but there are things that you don’t understand,” I replied.

“We’ve been friends for ten years now, I know you well enough,” she sighed, “you are going to do it, aren’t you?”

“I must there is no other way. The day I lost my mother was the worst day of my life. If I can turn back time and save her I am going to do it, at any cost.”

“You’re not thinking clearly.”

“I’ve never been so sure of anything in my life. I want to do this. This is important to me.”

“Why?”

“First of all, it’s something that my mother started. She invented this time machine and somehow I feel that she wanted me to continue her work. Secondly, I may actually succeed and save her.”

“Really? Have you considered that your mother had a good reason to stop working on this experiment?”

“No, she just wasn’t as stubborn as I am,” I winked at her.

It was the truth though. I remembered how passionate she was about time travel. She used to talk about her theories a lot. That’s why I wanted to continue it and I wasn’t going to get discouraged that easily. Besides I was almost there, everything had been planned to the smallest detail. I know where I was going, I knew what I must do once I’m there, and I knew how to get back to my time once my mission is complete. My mother’s time machine was operative.

“I hope you don’t regret.”

“Do you think I haven’t considered the dangers involved in this venture? All the things that can go wrong? Trust me I have. I won’t regret it even if the worst happened.”

With that thought in mind I pressed the button and suddenly the doors closed. The room I was in went dark. It was a small room, size of an elevator, there were no windows just a door and mirrors on the three sides. I pressed the red button that was going to take me back in time. To the time when my mother was still alive.

I wondered how my mother would feel when she found out that her time machine actually worked. She would be so happy. It was unfortunate that her life’s work went to waste simply because she wasn’t brave enough to continue with her experiments. I was though. I was a risk taker and I had just betted my whole existence on something no one had ever done before.

“Some things are just not important Anna,” someone was speaking in hushed tones, I vaguely recognized the voice, “it was never about courage sweetheart. I knew when to stop, I didn’t give up. You think my life’s work was wasted? Dear girl, I invented that machine in the hopes of finding a way to travel in time. I knew it would work but testing it was never important. My present was so perfect. I didn’t want to go back in time to change my life. My life with you was perfect.”

My head felt weird. I couldn’t feel my limbs. I was hyperventilating. Something was terribly wrong. Where was I? Who was this person whispering in my ear and what kind of gibberish were they spouting? Nothing was making any sense.

“Honey, I love you, know this. The only thing you can do now is let go of the past, let go of me, and live your life for yourself.”

That’s the last thing I remembered before I blacked out again.

I woke up in a hospital. I had no idea how I got there. Those words someone had spoken to me so softly still reverberated in my mind, but they meant nothing to me. It must have been a dream.

“Anna, you’re up,” the lady from the church said, “they say you can go back to the orphanage in a few days. Thankfully, nothing was broken.”

That’s when I remembered. I had fallen from the tree behind the church and hit my head on the pavement. Ah! So, that’s why it hurt so much. I tried to smile at her but I’m sure it was more of a wince.

“Don’t worry, you’d be good as new in no time.”

“What do you think happened?” Sandy asked.

“She went back in time and lost everything,” Mrs. Stevenson replied.

“What do you mean?”

“How much did you girls actually know about Dana’s project?”

“We have been working on it for more than six years now. Anna wanted to continue her mother’s experiments. We’ve read all of her notes and instructions. I think we know enough.”

“Clearly, you didn’t know the most important part or you wouldn’t have let Anna use that machine.”

“What do you mean?”

“What year did she choose to go back to?”

“2023.”

“Ah! That explains it then.”

“What?”

“She was never born.”

“What do you mean?”

“It’s true that Dana’s invention works, but there was a glitch in the system. You cannot go forth in time, only back, and even that has serious consequences. She went to 2023 you say, she was seven-year-old back then. So now she is a seven-year-old girl in 2023. However, not as our Anna. Our Anna is gone. She would be starting over as an entirely different person. Dana realized it during the last stages of her project and just gave up on it. To go back in time when you were alive meant that you would lose your existence and start over as someone else. Time travel is a tricky business. Too many unknowns are involved. No one can predict what kind of life they would end up having the second time around.”

“You mean Anna Brown ceased to exist?”

“Yes.”

“But if she never existed then how come we still have memories of her?”

“We always will. We knew her in this timeline. Everyone who knew her here will remember her. Unfortunately, she won’t remember any of us. She won’t have any memories of her past or present. She would have very different memories. I just hope that she found a better life.”

“I don’t think that’s possible because what can be better than perfect?” Sandy said sadly.

Some things are not important and must be left alone. Just because you can, doesn’t mean that you should. Anna wanted to see her mother again, even save her from death. She wanted to prove that her mother’s work was worth something and, in the process, she lost everything. She lost the woman she loved the most. Most importantly, she lost herself somewhere in time, forgotten forever.
